2017 Golden and Bronze Beeper Winners!

Congratulations to Halley Crissman for winning the 2017 Gloden Beeper Award! Fellow residents Adam Baruch and Emma Lawrence deserve congratulations on winning Bronze Beeper awards this year as well! They continue to uphold OBGYN's longstanding legacy of Galens Beeper Winners. Out of all Michigan Medicine's residents, approximately 900, only 10 receive Bronze Beepers and one male and one female receive the Golden Beeper. It is impressive for our relatively small department to win a quarter of the awards and speaks to our reputation as teachers and role models!

Department Chair honored at International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics World Congress

OBGYN Department Chair Dr. Timothy R.B. Johnson will receive the distinguished merit award at the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) Distinguished Merit Award World Congress Event in October.  The award “recognizes outstanding contribution to the ideals of FIGO and the promotion and support of women’s health worldwide.”

Two OBGYN Faculty Appointed to UMHS Committees

Congratulations to Drs. Dee Fenner and Carolyn Johnston for their recent appointments to UMHS committees.  Dr. Fenner was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure (ACAPT). Dr. Johnston was appointed to the Advisory Committee on Clinical Track Appointments and Promotions (CLINACAP). 

Dr. Michael Lanham and OBGYN Colleagues Win Prize for IVF App

UM’s Dr. Michael Lanham and colleagues were recently recognized for an app intended to help patients undergoing in-vitro fertilization take control of their treatment. Hacking Health awarded the team from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology with the Best Caregiver/Patient Management App and Best Clinical App for its IVF application “OnTrack,” designed to assist patients undergoing IVF with medication management, medication administration reminders, and provider/patient communication.
 

MSACOG 2015 Awards - Dr. Alice Chi and Dr. Heather Wahl

At the annual MSACOG meeting Dr. Alice Chi took hom 3rd place for her oral presentation and Dr. Heather Wahl won best scientific poster. Congratulations!

Dr. Michael Lanham wins 2 awards at Hacking Health Conference

Fast Forward Medical Innovation was a sponsor of the 1st annual Hacking Health Windsor/Detroit digital medicine Hackathon at TechTown Detroit on May 1-3. Dr. Michael Lanham won two awards for Best Caregiver/Patient Management Application and Best Clinical Application for his app "OnTrack," a service that puts a patient back in control of her fertility treatment cycles.
About 225 people participated at this event that brings together IT and healthcare professionals across the US-Canada border to collaborate, dream up, and design apps for patient-centric care.  

Dr. Cos Van De Ven Inducted into Medical School's League of Clinical Excellence

Dr. Cos Van De Ven was inducted into the Medical School's 2015 League of Clinical Excellence. Previous departmental inductees include Dr. Timothy Johnson (2012) and Dr. Marjorie Treadwell (2012).

Dr. John DeLancey wins SGS' Distinguished Surgeon Award

The Society of Gynecologic Surgeons has awarded John DeLancey, M.D., of the University of Michigan Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Distinguished Surgeon Award.

The award recognizes outstanding surgical leadership in gynecologic surgery. SGS is an elected society of the nation’s top leaders in the field aiming to promote excellence in gynecologic surgery. The award was presented during the SGS 41st annual clinical meeting in Orlando in March.

Dr. Karen McLean receives DOD Ovarian Academy career development award

Dr. Karen McLean received the DOD Ovarian Academy career development award.  The overarching goal of the Ovarian Cancer Academy is to develop successful, highly productive ovarian cancer researchers in a collaborative research training environment. 

Dr. Dee Fenner wins AUGS' Jack Robertson Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr. Dee Fenner was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Jack Robertson Lifetime Achievement Award. AUGS’ most prestigious award honors an individual who has had a lifetime of outstanding achievements in the field of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery and has served as a role model through service, basic or clinical research and teaching.  Dr. Fenner is the first woman to receive this award.

Lisa Kane Low elected President of the American College of Nurse Midwives

Lisa Kane Low has been elected to be President of the American College of Nurse Midwives.  Lisa is Coordinator of the Nurse Midwifery Education Program and Associate Professor of Nursing and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan. She has been active in ACNM for nearly 30 years and leads on the Healthy Birth Initiative subcommittee tasked with creating BirthTOOLS.org. As President-elect, Lisa will work alongside the President for one year, and officially become President at the ACNM 61st Annual Meeting in Albuquerque in 2016. 

Goldman, Gregerman win Hollenshead Award for equity efforts

Ed Goldman was recently named one of CEW's two 2015 Carol Hollenshead Award winners.  In honor of the Center for the Education of Women's former director, the Hollenshead Award is given annually to faculty or staff whose sustained efforts have resulted in greater equity in regard to gender, race, class, age, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. To read the full press release, click here

Dr. Dee Fenner - Sarah Goddard Power Award Winner

Carol R. Bradford, M.D., and Dee E. Fenner, M.D., both faculty members in the Medical School, have received Sarah Goddard Power Awards for 2015.

The ceremony for the 31st annual awards, presented to individuals who demonstrate scholarship, leadership and support of women faculty, will take place at 4 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Michigan League’s Hussey Room. The U-M Academic Women's Caucus sponsors the Power Award.

Dr. Dan Morgan Selected to AUG's Quality Improvement & Outcomes Research Network

Dan Morgan, M.D. was recently selected to be one of the inaugural members of the American Urogynecologic Society's Quality Improvement and Outcomes Research Network. Dr. Morgan was chosen because of his nationally recognized leadership ability, research accomplishments and expertise in Quality Improvement and Urogynecology.

Dr. Carolyn Johnston Wins SGO Humanitarianism & Volunteerism Award

Congratulations to Dr. Carolyn Johnston on receiving the Society of Gynecologic Oncology’s (SGO) Humanitarianism and Volunteerism Award for her long history of developing gynecologic oncology clinical  practice and training in Ghana and Ethiopia. We are all proud of you!

Department Faculty and Staff Recognized by 2014 Dean’s Awards

Each year, exceptional accomplishments by faculty and staff are recognized by Dean Woolliscroft in the areas of teaching, research, clinical care, community service and administration. These individuals have contributed their ideas and creativity; they are active participants in plan implementation; and they’re open to new ideas, tolerant of risk, and willing to change.

The department is proud to acknowledge Dr. Senait Fisseha and staff member Vanessa Clinton for their win and honorable mention, respectively. 

Appointment of Dr. Caren Stalburg as Division Chief, Division of Professional Education, Department of Learning Health Sciences

In May the UMMS Department of Medical Education was renamed the Department of Learning Health Sciences and was charged with a broader academic mission addressing learning by individuals, teams, organizations, and ultra-large scale systems.  The Department has three operating divisions:  the Division of Professional Education, the Division of Learning and Knowledge Systems, and the Clinical Simulation Center.
 
Effective September 1, Dr. Caren Stalburg will be appointed as Chief of the Division of Professional Education.
 

Erica Mowers - Golden Beeper Award Winner

This year, OB/GYN’s Erika Mowers, M.D., won the Galens Medical Society’s Golden Beeper that recognizes her as a top teacher among resident physicians – and continues a legacy for the department. The Golden Beeper is the highest honor for medical student education, leadership and patient care.  This is Mowers’ second golden beeper award and the department’s 16th beeper since 2005. Both OB/GYN Chief Resident and House Officer Justin Junn, M.D. and OB/GYN House Officer Natalie Clark, M.D., also won the bronze award this year.

MSACOG Junior Fellow Research Day Award Winners

At the Junior Fellow Michigan State ACOG Research day on May 23, 2012, oral and poster presentations were given from most of the Ob/Gyn programs around the state of Michigan, including:  William Beaumont Hospital, Henry Ford Health System, St. John’s Hospital, Providence Hospital, Oakwood Hospital, Wayne State University, Grand Rapids Medical Education partner’s/MSU, Sparrow Hospital, Hurley Medical Center, and the University of Michigan.  The following individuals won prizes:

SGS Best Video Award goes to Dr. Tovia Smith for Vaginal Hysterectomy Model Video

The video entitled "Vaginal Hysterectomy Teaching Model: An Educational Video" received the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons Prize for "Best Video Presentation".  Authors of the video were Tovia M. Smith, MD and Dee E. Fenner, MD.

The video presented a feasible, inexpensive and applicable surgical teaching model of the vaginal hysterectomy for gynecology residents, provided instructions for model assembly and performance, and demonstrated the basic key steps of the vaginal hysterectomy on both the model and from live surgery to reinforce proper technique.

Congratulations, Jennifer Kittell, Terri Murtland Scholarship Winner!

This year's winner, Jennifer Kittell is currently a second year student in the Nurse Midwifery Program who will graduate in May.  She had her first degree in Women's Studies from UM and then attended the second career program in nursing as part of her pathway to becoming a nurse midwife.  In addition to being a graduate student in the School of Nursing she is also a Graduate Student Instructor in the Women's Studies program where she
